EDUKASI DAN INFORMASI MENGENAI GEJALA DAN PENCEGAHAN STROKE DENGAN “FAST STROKE” PADA MASYARAKAT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Hypertension is a degenerative disease that affects nearly 25% of the world’s adult population (Adrogué & Madias, 2007). Hypertension is defined as systolic blood pressure >140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure >90 mmHg (National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute, 2003). The prevalence of hypertension is higher among Black individuals, men, and the elderly (August, 2003). The incidence of hypertension increases with age, and approximately 60% of all premature deaths caused by hypertension occur among patients with mild hypertension (Fisher & Gordon, 2005). Stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow decreases or stops, preventing the brain from receiving adequate oxygen supply, which may result in brain tissue damage. Globally, based on data from developed countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, there are approximately 795,000 stroke cases annually. In the United States, it is estimated that one person experiences a stroke every 40 seconds. Consequently, stroke is considered one of the leading causes of adult disability and ranks among the top five causes of mortality today (Berry JD et al., 2013). Early recognition of stroke symptoms by the general public can be facilitated through the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale (CPSS), which includes facial droop (one side of the face cannot move symmetrically), arm drift (one arm is difficult or unable to move), and speech disturbance (slurred speech, difficulty speaking, or using incorrect words), or through the FAST method (Face, Arm, Speech, Time). The “Time” component refers to the immediate action of contacting emergency services for transportation to a healthcare facility (Cook LK et al., 2011). Objective of Community Service: To provide health education about stroke and physical examination for the community. Method: This community service activity was carried out through direct observation of the community and general health education, particularly targeting individuals at risk of stroke. Result: This community service activity contributed to improving public health status by enhancing knowledge and awareness regarding stroke prevention and early recognition.
